WILDLIFE NEWS OF THE DAY - 060809

In wildlife news today, dozens of African elephants were removed from Malawi and put into a wildlife preserve due to fears farmers would kill them; but Lenny the Leadbeater's possum, mascot to an Australian ski lodge, was tobogganing down the slopes as snow season arrived in Victoria. Greenwich, Connecticut, residents are warming to the local raccoon population, but fear of rabies is a concern; and a raccoon found in a Groton, Connecticut, parking lot turned out to be rabid. South Dakota wildlife officials are planning to boost the female cougar kills in 2010; while North Carolina wildlife officials seek to provide some additional protection for bald eagles in that state. The thriving population of the Hawaiian hawk has prompted Fish and Wildlife officials to hold public hearings for suggestions on their next move in regards to this protected species; but a sad ending for a pair of fledgling hawks in Ohio as raccoons apparently raided the nest and made off with the youngsters. Details of an effort by Helena, Montana, officials to control an overabundance of deer in the city is explained; even as the Kashmir deer, or hangul, is bouncing back from near-extinction in India. An Ohio motorcyclist and his rider took a spill after hitting a deer in the road; and a foursome of motorcyclists in Upstate New York had problems when a deer jumped into the road. An update on plans to trap coyotes in Grass Valley, California, is up next. A young black bear was caught on camera rummaging through a trash bin at a Fredonia, New York, park over the weekend; and Fairfax County, Virginia, had its first confirmed bear sighting of the year. A Canadian is in jail after hosing down three people with bear spray, causing them to be hospitalized; and occupants of a van smuggling contraband bear paws and other wildlife remains over the Chinese border were detained by authorities. A grandfather and grandmother both got a little excitement out of a bear cub's visit to their Yucaipa, California, garage; while a trail runner in Pennsylvania had a close encounter with a black bear, but still managed to win the race. A veterinarian whose home was broken into by a black bear in Knoxville, Tennessee, last week is remorseful over her part in the bear's demise; but a Wisconsin bear cub had a bit of a run-in with a bird feeder that became stuck on its head. And finally, Boulder, Colorado, hotel employees found out why you don't want to open bear spray inside!
