WILDLIFE NEWS OF THE DAY - 060409

Wildlife news leads off with a story that shows that another interesting characteristic humans share with great apes appears to be enjoyment of a good tickling session; followed by one from the Morton Arboretum, outside of Chicago, Illinois, which has created a set of super-sized exhibits to give kids an idea of what the world looks like to wildlife. A puzzling increase in attacks on wildlife is plaguing Scotland. A program discussing the estimated 1 million bobcats living in North America will be conducted in a Colorado community next week. Following sightings of at least one bear in a Colorado Springs, Colorado, park, authorities provided tips on what to do when encountering a bear; which is good information, considering the booming bear population in the US, as disclosed by the next item. A bear spooked by a dog crashed through the glass door of a home in Knoxville, Tennessee, last night; while a black bear was seen in Georgia communities (outside, fortunately). California Fish and Game officers detained a black bear cub who rambled through an Upland, California, apartment complex yesterday. A story out of West Virginia advises residents on the impending influx of black bear yearlings chased off by expectant moms. Delaware wildlife officials offer advice on what to do about deer frolicking in the Atlantic surf; but Maryland authorities are warning residents about the threat from ticks during the next few weeks; and a Niagara Falls, New York, motel had a deer check in unexpectedly. A webcam at a Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, institute focused on some fledgling hawks recorded over 350,000 visitors by the time the youngsters took their first tentative flights; and the Hawk Migration Association of North America is showcased in an article about red-tailed hawks out of New York. A hiker in Colorado found the mutilated carcass of a bald eagle. A pack of coyotes evidently took down a deer in a Massachusetts park; but a reader comments on alarmist headlines in regards to coyotes in a Southern California neighborhood in an Op-Ed piece. A coyote is suspected of mortally wounding a dog outside of Cleveland, Ohio; even as the importance of keeping dogs on a leash in California coyote country is emphasized. Some observations by a writer in Denver, Colorado, about the increasing coyote problem are made in the next article. A skunk specialist from Orange County, California, provides tips for living with stinky neighbors. And finally, a possum has been causing a ruckus while paying visits to the New South Wales Parliament in Australia!
