WILDLIFE NEWS OF THE DAY - 060109

First up in wildlife news today, we had a visit from a bear here in Glendora, California, over the weekend; and a Pennsylvania community had an ursine visitor as well. Two bear stories out of West Virginia today: a black bear, that state's symbol, decided to visit the state capital over the weekend; and yet another bear paid a visit to a local oil company. A bear which had wandered into a Washington state community was hazed and released in the hope it will not return; but wildlife authorities finally caught up with a large black bear that was frequenting parts of Florida; and a possible bear sighting was made in a New Jersey community. Some tips for avoiding auto-deer collisions is offered; something which ties in with our next two articles: two people were injured when their motorcycle collided with a deer in Nebraska; and a Tennessee man was hospitalized after wrecking his car trying to avoid hitting a deer in the road. Minnesota researchers explain the etiology of Chronic Wasting Disease among deer; while the next item gives an in-depth discussion of North American deer breeds; followed by a discussion of deer diet by the executive director of a Mississippi non-profit. As skunk encounters increase, a writer from Arkansas provides a remedy to de-skunk pets who've been sprayed. Red-tailed hawks have found a home on the steeple of a church in an Indiana community. A Massachusetts hunter got a reaction from the wrong species while turkey hunting! A tagged and radio-collared cougar was shot in Colorado after attacking a beagle; and a pair of cougars was seen in a British Columbia, Canada, community. The debate in Greenwood, Colorado, over hunting urban coyotes was addressed by a meeting this past weekend. A story from New Zealand tells a bizarre tale of death while possum hunting. A number of wildlife-human interaction stories from Contra Costa, California, are up next. The spread of residential areas may be important to the spread of rabies among wildlife, as an article from Augusta, Georgia, explains. The Humane Society helped collect a litter of baby raccoons after the mother was trapped and killed in Connecticut. And finally, a cute photo of a couple of young bandits is provided in our last wildlife item today.
