WILDLIFE NEWS OF THE DAY - 080509

We lead off wildlife news with congratulations to Bai Yun, a female Giant Panda who just gave birth to her fifth cub at California's San Diego Zoo, helping to bolster the population of this endangered species; but having survived the Black Saturday bushfires in Victoria, Australia, Sam the koala must now survive abdominal surgery to remove life-threatening tumors. A black bear was shot by a cabin dweller near Bryce Canyon National Park in Utah; and the 2007 shooting of a rare Washington state grizzly bear will be going to trial shortly. A trio of bears stirred up some trouble in a Florida neighborhood; but a Norwegian polar bear feasted on a gift from the sea: a dead Orca! Animal rights activists found an unreceptive audience when they lobbied the Cherokee Nation to dispense with their bear zoos. The odyssey of a black bear across Georgia and Florida is recounted in the next item. A resident of Oregon had a startling encounter with an aggressive raccoon on her back porch; while a wildlife writer from Central California tackles topics on raccoons and squirrels in the next item. A zoo in Minnesota has acquired two 14-week old wolf pups who are getting used to their new quarters; and a Canadian dog trainer is offering a community in Toronto, Ontario, a potential solution to their coyote problems: chase them away. A New Jersey county reported that a coyote was found to be rabid; and a San Antonio, Texas, neighborhood is reporting increased sightings of urban coyotes. A seaside resort in Wales is discussing using hawks to scare away sea birds who they consider a nuisance; and although bald eagles usually keep to themselves, one sociable raptor in Maryland dined with some vultures, demonstrating that not all birds of a feather stick together! Officials in Illinois are wrestling with a stinky problem due to state policy that captured skunks are to be euthanized due to rabies danger; and people handling a litter of cute baby skunks in South Dakota may have gotten more than they expected when one of the kits turned out to be rabid. The next article could probably be titled 'For want of a nail (or in this case, rabbit)' and is a cautionary tale of how Global Warming is affecting Glacier National Park's indispensible species: the snowshoe hare. A reader from Wyoming pokes a bit of fun at environmental groups protecting elk from oil rigs, but not wolves. Wisconsin's deer herd is showing increasing prevalence of the deadly 'chronic wasting disease'; while a Michigan man has been accused of shooting deer within the city limits, endangering nearby homeowners. And finally, the next time you hear a hissing or rattling noise in your car's engine, don't assume it's a mechanical problem!
