WILDLIFE NEWS OF THE DAY - 040109

Another report of a cougar has been made in San Mateo County, California, in wildlife news today; followed by a story about a cougar sighting in Virginia that has raised a debate on the veracity of the report. An endangered species of dolphins has been found to have more members than originally thought in Bangladesh. A woman in York, Ontario, Canada, discusses her work with orphaned wildlife; and a wildlife sanctuary outside of Reno, Nevada, provides some insight into why wild animals don't usually make good pets, something the owners of the sanctuary found out the hard way. Hunters are in the news today: Florida is having a number of meetings where hunters, conservationists, and the general public can comment on deer hunting in that state; and Wisconsin did much the same thing; a Canadian hunter argues in favor of hunting wildlife in Muskoka, Ontario; and, getting a dose of his own medicine, a possum hunter in New Zealand had to be airlifted to a hospital after swallowing cyanide paste! More details on the lawsuit by a dozen groups to prevent the gray wolf from being removed from the endangered species list. To underscore the phrase 'no good deed goes unpunished', a study shows that people who feed deer to help them through tough winters may actually be contributing to a road-kill rate that is half the total killed by hunters, a problem emphasized by the following two articles from New York State. A native of Australia reflects on overpopulation of some species of wildlife there; while police sharpshooters in Helena, Montana, have concluded their cull of mule deer, the venison being distributed to needy families. A man in Niagara County, New York, was bitten on the leg by a coyote, the third incident involving wildlife attacks in that area; and a warning from New Jersey about raccoons with rabies follows. And finally, in honor of April Fool's Day, a story about some skunks in York, Maine, that got people's attention!
