WILDLIFE NEWS OF THE DAY - 040409

In wildlife news today, accusations are flying about the trapping and subsequent death of a jaguar caught by wildlife officials in Arizona; followed by another look at the ongoing discussion of the Montana cougar population. Two cougar cubs were seen on the edge of Solvang, California, on Thursday. Michigan wildlife officials are grappling with an abundance of deer in one part of that state; a problem underscored by the next story, in which a trio of deer made an unexpected foray through a Michigan couple's house Saturday afternoon (not exactly the game they planned to watch!) Montana wildlife officials provide some positive data on the grizzly bear population in their area; while the US Fish and Wildlife Service is celebrating the successful reintroduction of gray wolves in Montana, Idaho, and elsewhere. Live video feed of eaglets hatching, provided by British Columbia-based Hancock Wildlife Foundation, has proved to be an internet sensation. A rash of eagle shootings has people in South Dakota upset; but a red-tailed hawk that collided with an SUV a couple of weeks ago will be sent home soon. In Maine, rabies is in the news; and the Washington Post provides some information on panda bear ecology. The Center For Biological Diversity is trying to get a small mountain dweller listed as an endangered species, due to increasing temperatures driving pika out of their traditional locations. A retrospective is provided on Australian possums as an invasive species in New Zealand. And finally, playing a different tune, performers that played to raise funds for human bushfire relief plan to do a benefit to provide funds for aid to wildlife injured in the Black Saturday bushfires.
