WILDLIFE NEWS OF THE DAY - 040309

An Indiana Humane Society branch is thankful for the actions of a kennel dog there who chased off robbers, but their guardian still ended up getting a bath after running into a skunk! Rabid wildlife in northern Virginia have homeowners on edge after a couple of recent attacks; and Wheeling, West Virginia, reported their first rabies case since 2007. In Wisconsin, a wily cougar has been evading wildlife biologists who want to collar it to learn more about the cat population there; and a Michigan man recounts changes in the woods where he lives. Arizona Game and Fish officials are warning people about a cougar in a county park; while a farmer in Arkansas is fed up with apparent cougar attacks on his cattle; and DFW officers in a town in Washington state may have a cougar in the neighborhood. An Alaskan black bear is evidently beating the garbage trucks to people's trash; drivers in Wisconsin saw an unusual sight on the way to work - a 300 lb black bear; but a Massachusetts couple had an unwelcome visitor help itself to their bird seed stockpile. A columnist from Minnesota decries that state's lack of restrictions on hunters amid a dwindling deer population. An Oregon Dept of Fish and Wildlife wolf expert will be speaking about his favorite subject towards the end of the month; while in New Mexico, a judge ruled in favor of conservationists in regards to gray wolf depredation. A trio of stories from the BBC and Associated Press in the next article: two stories deal with tigers in Sumatra, the third with the urban coyote issue in the US. Coyotes are in the news in an Ohio suburb. And in a sign of our troubled financial times, a bald eagle foundation in Tennessee was victimized by a sleazy financial advisor. Raccoons, often seen as pests, get to show off their more endearing qualities in a series of videos associated with the next item from Illinois. And finally, we've all heard about deer being hit by cars and trucks - but a Coast Guard icebreaker?
