WILDLIFE NEWS OF THE DAY - 070209

Dogs came off the worse for wear in our first two wildlife stories today: dog owners in Massachusetts were shocked that a deer attacked their 85-lb lab, but authorities speculate she was probably defending her offspring from a perceived threat; and a dog in Salem, Oregon, mixed it up with a coyote over night. A city slicker chronicles his epic quest for the urban coyote in Chicago, Illinois. A pair of thieves made off with a baby skunk from a Florida pet store; but a homeowner from Ontario, Canada, recalls her stinky encounter with a skunk by the back door. A cougar was seen in the vicinity of Anaconda, Montana; and a cougar in a Colorado neighborhood apparently decapitated several pets. After half-a-dozen sightings of a cougar around a Wyoming community, wildlife authorities provide helpful tips on how to avoid a dangerous encounter. A new means for detecting the gender of a Philippine Eagle is revealed: mathematics! Bald eagles are multiplying along the Potomac River (I guess they know how to use mathematics, too); while a bald eagle, who was apparently injured in a fight with another raptor, has been rehabilitated and released in Ohio. A red-tailed hawk who was mauled by a wolf was released back into the wilds of Colorado on Wednesday. A black bear who frequented a property in North Carolina was evidently looking for food; but as mother bears cut loose their offspring to prepare for a new batch, a big game expert in New York state discusses co-existing with these 'juvenile delinquents'. The curious case of a dispute over a road-killed bear between a Texan and Texas Parks and Wildlife Department is the topic of our next story. For those interested in the history of grizzly bears in Montana from the nineteenth century to present day, this article is for you! A battle is raging between PETA and the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians over bear enclosures in the Smoky Mountains; but a story from Chattanooga, Tennessee, highlights the shortfalls of animal control in their area. And finally, as trash collectors go on strike in Toronto, Canada, this whimsical look at an alternate trash disposal force is provided!
