First up in wildlife news today, the plight of Victoria's animal residents after Black Saturday is recounted; but our next story sounds better suited to a tabloid than a wildlife newsletter, as commentators discuss 'monster' sightings in Vermont. A Colorado wolf sanctuary is showcased; followed by a story that explores the uneasy relationship between gray wolves and Washington residents. Coyotes in a Central California community are becoming more brazen in their attacks. A Canadian in an Ontario community has a dilemma caring for a pair of orphaned baby raccoons; and an Arkansas wildlife refuge gets pretty noisy around raccoon feeding time! A Connecticut motorist had a close encounter with a 200-lb black bear; while the rambling bear cub who visited Ft Myers, Florida, has been returned to the wild. Folks in Minnesota are given some advice on co-existing with their ursine neighbors; even as bear activity picks up in Oregon, where the following story gives some insight as to how hunting limits are determined. Two dogs in New York were lucky to have their rabies shots up to date when they encountered a rabid raccoon; but more rabid wildlife has been found in Arizona. Some sage advice is provided about one of the best skunk repellants found by a wildlife expert in New Mexico: moth balls! A German study shows that birds are not the only ones influenced by earth's magnetic field, and the effect power lines have on mammal's orientation was a revelation. A sad ending to a clutch of swan eggs in Massachusetts after the mother died and the father left; but a happier outcome outside of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where a hawk still learning how to fly was rescued after it became grounded and will be cared for at Schuylkill Center Wildlife Rehabilitation Clinic. Poaching of bald eagles in Colorado appears to be a growing trend; and poaching in Scotland is the topic of the next article. Contra Costa County's Huckleberry Botanic Regional Preserve, in California, is the next topic, along with some advice about dealing with cougars in the area; followed by a harrowing tale of survival as a traveler from the UK ended up battling a cougar in British Columbia in 1985. A motorcyclist in Indiana had a fatal encounter with a deer; some background material on deer ticks in Illinois is provided by the next article; followed by one about a garden center in Oregon which is holding forth on a score of deer-resistant plants. And finally, the District Attorney's office in a Minnesota town looked like a blood-splattered crime scene after a deer crashed in through one window and out through another!
