WILDLIFE NEWS OF THE DAY - 050709

California Fish and Game officials have closed a couple of campgrounds in the vicinity of yesterday's cougar encounter as a precaution against any additional incidents; but have been unable to locate the cougar, as the next item details; and wildlife wardens are debating whether the dog, in fact, attacked the cat first. A Hollywood pet group stepped forward to aid the dog with his recovery. In the meantime, residents of Crestline, in Southern California, had an unwanted guest in their domestic cat enclosure; but Colorado Division of Wildlife officers were able to tranquilize and capture a young cougar prior to relocating it. The mystery of an elusive cougar continues to haunt wildlife officials (and homeowners) in Missouri, however. Yesterday was a busy day for California Fish and Game with bears as well: one removed from an apartment complex in Camarillo and another caught in a La Verne neighborhood. The chief warden of a Vermont district discussed why officials had to shoot a bear last week rather than relocating it; and the debate over the endangered status of polar bears rages on, as the next article demonstrates. A Christian Science Monitor article gives some background material on the gray wolf debate. Colorado Division of Wildlife is on a search-and-destroy mission after a coyote killed a pet; but police in another Colorado community have a more humane approach: hazing with paintballs! Coyotes are on the prowl in Central Florida, where one family lost a cherished pet. Rabies outbreaks have been documented in a Tennessee county; a Pennsylvania township; and California's Santa Ynez Valley, as shown by the next three articles; but rabies vaccination cubes will be distributed around Cleveland, Ohio, to help cut down on rabid wildlife there, particularly raccoons. A Wyoming community is faced with a dilemma that's splitting the town: culling of overabundant deer or co-existence? An update on Nebraska's tests on deer herds for bovine tuberculosis is provided; while a press release about a clever deer crossing warning system is demonstrated in the next item. And finally, a Yakima, Washington, homeless man who broke into a house claimed he was just escaping a cougar, something authorities didn't believe for a minute!
